Extrafloral nectaries of annatto ( Bixa orellana L.): anatomy, nectar composition and activity during organ development Acta Botanica
Miranda,Rafaela Marques de; Nery,Lays Araújo; Ventrella,Marília Contin.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to anatomically characterize the extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) of annatto (Bixa orellana) and determine the composition of its nectar in order to better understand their structure and function during organ development. Standard light and scanning electron microscopy techniques were used for anatomical analysis, and test-strips and a refractometer for determining nectar composition. Both receptacle and stem EFNs were found to possess similar anatomy and nectar composition, and to secrete from early to advanced developmental stages of the organs to which they are associated. EFNs consisting of uniseriate epidermis, nectariferous parenchyma and subnectariferous parenchyma were found located where vascular tissue is immersed. Some...

Glands on the foliar surfaces of tribe Cercideae (Caesapiniodeae, Leguminosae): distribution and taxonomic significance Anais da ABC (AABC)
DUARTE-ALMEIDA,JOAQUIM M.; CLEMENTE,MILENE S.; ARRUDA,ROSANI C.O.; VAZ,ANGELA M.S.F.; SALATINO,ANTONIO.
Large elongated glands occur on Cercideae leaf surfaces. Leaves of Bauhinia (55 taxa, 53 species), Cercis (1 species), Phanera (1 species), Piliostigma (2 species), Schnella (19 species) and Tylosema (1 species) were observed to determine location and relative number of glands. They were only observed on the abaxial leaf surface of 42 Bauhinia taxa. The glands were analyzed by light stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscopy. They are large (up to 270 µm long and 115 µm wide) and multicellular, containing lipophilic substances, probably volatile oils. Presence or absence and density of the glands in species of Bauhinia may be useful to determine species delimitation or distinction among infraspecific taxa. Higher density of glands is more common in...

Histochemistry, content and chemical composition of essential oil in different organs of Alpinia zerumbet Ciência Rural
Jezler,Caroline Nery; Batista,Ricardo Silva; Alves,Péricles Barreto; Silva,Delmira da Costa; Costa,Larissa Corrêa do Bomfim.
Alpinia zerumbet is a medicinal plant from Asian origin used in folk medicine for the treatment of hypertension, which effect is attributed to terpinen-4-ol, the major component of the essential oil. The objective of this work was to identify the essential oil secretory structures in the leaf, flower, root and rhizome of this plant, and analyze the content and the chemical composition of the oil in the different organs of the plant. Sections were subjected to histochemical test with Nadi reagent for in situ localization of secretion. The essential oil extraction was performed by hydrodistillation in a Clevenger apparatus and the compounds were identified in CG-EM/FID. The histochemical test was positive for terpenoids, confirming the presence of essential...

Stipular colleters in Psychotria nuda (Cham. & Schltdl.) Wawra (Rubiaceae): micromorphology, anatomy and cristals microanalysis Acta Botanica
Miguel,Emílio de Castro; Moraes,Daniel Gomes de; Cunha,Maura Da.
Colleters are secretory structures, with a protective function, that occur in different organs and in many Angiospermae families. The aim of this work was to describe the anatomy and micromorphology of colleters present in Psychotria nuda (Cham. & Schltdl.) Wawra as well as analyze the structure and composition of crystals from the central axis of the structure under study. The material was collected at the Tinguá Biological Reserve and processed according to usual techniques for light and scanning electron microscopy. The colleters are of the lachrymiform type, with an elongated central axis, formed by fundamental parenchyma, sheathed by a palisade layer, responsible for the secretion. Raphid crystals were observed in the central axis of the...

Trichomes and chemical composition of the volatile oil of Trichogonia cinerea (Gardner) R. M. King & H. Rob. (Eupatorieae, Asteraceae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
FERNANDES,YANNE S.; TRINDADE,LUMA M.P.; REZENDE,MARIA HELENA; PAULA,JOSÉ R.; GONÇALVES,LETÍCIA A..
Trichogonia cinerea is endemic to Brazil and occurs in areas of cerrado and campo rupestre. In this study, we characterized the glandular and non-glandular trichomes on the aerial parts of this species, determined the principal events in the development of the former, and identified the main constituents of the volatile oil produced in its aerial organs. Fully expanded leaves, internodes, florets, involucral bracts, and stem apices were used for the characterization of trichomes. Leaves, internodes, florets, and involucral bracts were examined by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, whereas stem apices were examined only by light microscopy. Branches in the reproductive phase were used for the extraction and determination of the composition...

Ultrastructure of secretory and senescence phase in colleters of Bathysa gymnocarpa and B. stipulata (Rubiaceae) Rev. Bras. Bot.
Miguel,Emilio de Castro; Klein,Denise Espellet; Oliveira,Marco Antonio de; Cunha,Maura da.
(Ultrastructure of secretory and senescence phase in colleters of Bathysa gymnocarpa and B. stipulata (Rubiaceae)). Colleters are secretory structures formed by a parenchymatic axis with vascular bundles, bound by a layer of secretory palisade-like epidermis. Some studies regarding the structure of colleters have focused on secretory cells structure, but not distinguished the secretory and senescent phases. Generally, in mucilage-secreting cells such as colleters, the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus are involved in secretion production and transport. In these study, colleters structure of Bathysa gymnocarpa K. Schum. and B. stipulata (Vell.) C. Presl. (Rubiaceae) were determined in two phases: a secretory phase and a senescence one. Samples were...
